Wind Power Tax Break Headed to Oklalhoma Governor's Desk

OKLAHOMA CITY - Rarely has Oscar Hammerstein II been so often quoted by state lawmakers as during the 2008 session of the Oklahoma Legislature. Nearly every time a bill to promote wind power generation came up for discussion - which was often - at least one legislator would mention that the Sooner State is known for how "the wind comes sweepin' down the plain," as Hammerstein wrote in the lyrics to the state's official song, Oklahoma.

Oklahoma should make good use of such an abundant resource, say supporters of the pro-wind generation bills that came up. Also often quoted was the Southwest Power Pool, the regional transmission organization that oversees electricity transmission for the eight- state region of which Oklahoma is a part. SPP studies estimate that Oklahoma has the potential to develop more than 20,000 megawatts of wind generation capacity. That's more power than the state's utilities are currently able to generate from all fuel sources, and roughly twice the amount of wind power that is currently online throughout the U.S.
