Commentary: Subject to Change: A Prodigal Son Returns to Oklahoma

Summary

Talk about boomerang. One of my favorite prodigal-son-comes-home stories of late has to do with Bishop Steven Charleston, a member of the Choctaw Nation who has distinguished himself internationally as an advocate for indigenous peoples and the environment. Starting on Aug. 16 as the interim dean at downtown Oklahoma City's St. Paul's Cathedral for the next three years, Charleston has served as the bishop of Alaska; the dean of the Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, Mass. (next door to Harvard University); and, most recently, as the provost of Grace Cathedral in San Francisco (atop Nob Hill). A Duncan native, his son, Nick, is now a Choctaw language instructor in Duncan. He has been married to artist Suzanne Charleston for 33 years.
