When Bob Stoops was traveling on an airplane early one morning in December 1998 to officially take the job as the University of Oklahoma's head football coach, he says he realized shortly before the aircraft landed that Sooner fans might want to hear a few thoughts from their new coach on his first day.

He then began to write down a few bullet points that he would share with media and fans during his introduction to the public. He included such points as the expectation he had to bring championships back to the university, but there was one point that consisted of two words that he wrote in big, bold letters: no excuses.
