Most people who enter the hospital anticipating surgery do so with the intent of getting better, not extending their stay due to a surgical-site infection. However, the rates of post-surgical infections have been of major concern to the health care industry and studies show such infections cost the patient, on average, an additional $3,000 and seven extra days in the hospital.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services have co-sponsored a quality improvement project to study the issue. And Oklahoma City's Mercy Health Center was part of the 56-hospital national collaborative to find the best methods to minimize such surgical-site infections.See the full content of this document
