Mercy Health Center Scores High at Reducing Infections

Summary


Most people who enter the hospital anticipating surgery do so with the intent of getting better, not extending their stay due to a surgical-site infection. However, the rates of post-surgical infections have been of major concern to the health care industry and studies show such infections cost the patient, on average, an additional $3,000 and seven extra days in the hospital.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services have co-sponsored a quality improvement project to study the issue. And Oklahoma City's Mercy Health Center was part of the 56-hospital national collaborative to find the best methods to minimize such surgical-site infections.
