J. Leland Gourley, Okc Newspaper Publisher to Be Presented a Newly Created Award

Summary

A newly created award will be presented to J. Leland Gourley, local suburban weekly newspaper publisher, at the Downtown Rotary club President's Day program today. The Rotary will honor Gourley, one of its past presidents, with the Lifetime Vocational Service Award. Accompanying the award is a $3,000 grant to Community Literacy Centers, to buy otherwise unaffordable computer software for Intensive Phonics training as recommended by the Oklahoma Literacy Resource Office.

Gourley, founder, chief executive and publisher of OKC FRIDAY, has been a Rotarian for 56 years. Before moving to Oklahoma City in 1958 to be chief of staff for Gov. J. Howard Edmondson, he attended OU, worked for the Seminole Producer and was state editor of the Associated Press. Drafted into World War II, he served in Europe as an army artillery officer with rank of major at war's end. He was a recipient of the Bronze Star and five combat battle stars.
