Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation Receives Grant
Kenneth Hensley, an Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation scientist, has received a $158,000 grant to study whether a common, over-the-counter drug can slow the progression of a deadly neurodegenerative disease. Hensley received the grant from the Muscular Dystrophy Association to fund research on acetaminophen, the active ingredient in Tylenol. Elk City Manager Indicted by Federal Jury
Guy Hylton Jr., city manager of Elk City, was indicted by a federal grand jury Tuesday on three counts alleging violations of federal environmental laws, including the Clean Air Act. The indictments center on disposal of asbestos insulation waste removed from the Rock Island Railroad Depot. Purchased by the city in 2002, the depot was built in the early 1900s.
Gov. Henry Makes Appointments: December 20, 2006
Gov. Brad Henry announced the following appointments to a number of state boards and commissions: Bill McKamey was named to the Board of Regents of the Tulsa Community College; Thomas Coniglione to the Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports; Jim Hess and Jeff L. Gregston to the Task Force on Nursing Home Insurance Access; and Jim Boden to the Oklahoma Liquefied Petroleum Gas Research, Marketing and Safety Commission.

Mcafee & Taft Attorneys Named to 2006 Edition of Oklahoma Super Lawyers
Thirty-four attorneys from McAfee & Taft have been named to the inaugural 2006 edition of Oklahoma Super Lawyers, with seven being singled out for "Top Lawyers" honors. Frank D. Ok Court of Civil Appeals Dismisses Malpractice Case Solely On Missing Affidavit
The Oklahoma Court of Civil Appeals on Dec. 8 threw out a medical malpractice lawsuit because the plaintiff did not comply with the law requiring an affidavit attesting to the case's merit. Citing the Oklahoma Affordable Access to Health Care Act, the appeals court affirmed the trial court's decision to dismiss the case due to the plaintiff's failure to include the affidavit.
Mcclendon, Partners Invest $35m in Procure: Proton Therapy Center Set to Open in Okc in 2009
ProCure Treatment Centers Inc. officials on Tuesday said a $35 million equity investment has been forwarded by McClendon Venture Company LLC and partners. McClendon Venture Company is owned by Chesapeake Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Aubrey K. McClendon, and local businessmen Shannon T. Self and John B. Frick also invested in the project.
Oklahoma Supreme Court Strikes Down Tort Reform Measure
With a ruling that railed against insurance companies pushing for tort reform while continuing to jack up rates and premiums, the Oklahoma Supreme Court on Tuesday struck down a significant piece of the tort reform package the Legislature passed in 2003. The law requires plaintiffs who file a medical malpractice lawsuit to first get a signed affidavit attesting that a qualified expert has reviewed the case and deemed it worthy to go to trial. The court ruled the law is unconstitutional.
