Nea Awards $718,200 in Grants to Six Ok Arts Groups

The National Endowment for the Arts has awarded grants totaling $718,200 to six arts entities in Oklahoma. The Oklahoma Arts Council will receive $589,200 to support partnership agreement activities.

Oklahoma Library Association Presents 2005 Special Project Award to Sonic Corp.

The Oklahoma Library Association has awarded its 2005 Special Project Award to Sonic Crop. for participation in the annual statewide Summer Reading program. More than 97,000 children participated in the 2004 program at more than 200 public library sites throughout the state. The Choctaw County Library also was presented a Special Project Award for buying a new library building for Hugo.

Ok's Kiwanis Clubs Pledge $100k to Children's Medical Research Institute

Children's Medical Research Institute, the local affiliate of Children's Miracle Network, has received a $100,000 pledge from about 67 Kiwanis Clubs across western and central Oklahoma to establish the Oklahoma Kiwanis Endowed Research Program in Childhood Diabetes. Edmond Historical Society Names Executive Director

Stuart Howard has been named executive director of the Edmond Historical Society & Museum. Howard is an adjunct professor of American history at the Oklahoma City Community College and was with the Kirkpatrick Science and Air Space Museum at Omniplex for 15 years. He also served as a curatorial assistant for the Oklahoma Historical Society.

Ok State Univ. Foundation Names Director of Planned Giving

Keri Williams of Oklahoma City has been named director of planned giving for the Oklahoma State University Foundation. Williams is responsible for developing private support for Oklahoma State University through gifts made by wills, trusts, life insurance and life income arrangements. She is a 1997 OSU graduate. She graduated from Oklahoma City University Law School in 2000 and was an associate attorney with Steidley & Neal, a law firm in Tulsa.

U of Ok Receives Grant From Andrew W. Mellon Foundation in New York

The University of Oklahoma's History of Science Department and the History of Science Collections were awarded a $300,000 grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation in New York. The grant, which will be placed in an OU endowment, will permanently fund travel fellowships, bringing visiting scholars to the university to use the internationally recognized resources.

Leichter Music Scholarship Endowment Fund Established at Oklahoma City University

Kurt and Cathy Leichter have established the Leichter Music Scholarship Endowment Fund at Oklahoma City University. Oklahoma City University is known all over the world for the quality of performers it graduates, said Kurt Leichter, a member of OCU's board of trustees. We want to take part in ensuring that reputation is continued well into the future.

Proceeds From Ok License Plates Going to Tree Planting Projects

Proceeds from Oklahoma's Trees Make A Difference license plates will be used to provide grants to nonprofit group for public tree planting projects. Grants will be issued by the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry.

Toby Keith to Hold Charity Golf Event in Okc

Country music star Toby Keith plans to bring back a charity golf event for a second year. The Toby Keith & Friends Golf Classic on Saturday will again benefit Ally's House, an organization named after a former band member's daughter who died of cancer. The inaugural event last year raised more than $250,000.

Rose State College Students Help Create Special-Needs Computer Lab

Members of the Rose State College Students in Free Enterprise team have collaborated with the Oklahoma Foundation for the Disabled to create a special-needs computer lab. The computer lab, designed to accommodate students with disabilities, is a seven-unit facility offering courses in basic computer and Internet skills. All courses are taught by members of Students in Free Enterprise. Computers for the lab at 8421 N. Walker Ave. in Oklahoma City were donated by Noble Public Schools.

U.S. Cellular Awards $25k Grant to Central Ok Habitat for Humanity

U.S. Cellular has awarded a $25,000 grant to Central Oklahoma Habitat for Humanity. The grant will be used to purchase a vehicle for transporting volunteers, materials and families to and from residential building sites. U.S. Cellular is committed to improving the quality of life in the communities it serves, said Kenny Egli, director of sales for U.S. Cellular in Oklahoma City.

Oklahoma Library for the Blind Names Volunteer of the Year

S. Jean Clark has been named volunteer of the year for the Oklahoma Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped. Clark volunteers nine hour per week at the library's recording studio. Last year, Library for the Blind staff mailed free books on tape to 4,973 Oklahomans who are blind or visually impaired and those with other disabilities that make it difficult to use standard print.

Tim Reardon has been elected president of HeartLine, formerly known as Contact Crisis Helpline. Other officers include Bryan Brewster, vice president; Sara Kersey, secretary; and David W. Gandall, treasurer.

He was honoree at a reception this week at the home of Ann and Bob Hoover and he loved the guests even if they didn't bring their checkbooks. Ed is director of personal campaigns, Office of Development, for the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington. He was making his first visit to Oklahoma City at Ann's invitation.

Gasoline Prices in Ok Drop Nearly 9 Cents a Gallon

Gasoline prices in Oklahoma have fallen by nearly 9 cents per gallon since reaching a record high last month, AAA Oklahoma said Wednesday. The average price of a gallon of regular, self-serve gasoline has fallen 8.8 cents to $2.082 from the record high of $2.17 reached on April 11, the agency said.

Cameron Univ., U of Tulsa Student Teams Win Cash Prizes in Business Plan Competition

An undergraduate student team from Cameron University and a graduate student team from the University of Tulsa each won a $20,000 cash prize for first place in their divisions by participating in the Donald W. Reynolds Governor's Cup Collegiate Business Plan Competition. One of the goals of the competition is to encourage the development and commercialization of ideas and technologies being discovered in our universities, said Greg Main, president and CEO of i2E, which managed the competition.
